The End…is Near

lost cast

Hi there. It’s been awhile. I hope you’re well. I’m good. Consider this post as simply a placeholder. With only four episodes of Lost left to air, I will soon need a safe place, somewhere I can rant, rave and ramble about my musings on the end of Lost. This will be that place.

If you saw last week’s episode, you know that we got a taste of how painful these last few episodes are going to be. Goodbye Sayid. Goodbye Frank Lapidus (maybe?).

Goodbye, Jin and Sun.

Whew, even to type it now, it stings. I was talking Lost to a friend of mine two weeks ago, before I knew what was going to happen in that damn sub. I remember saying to friend, “I know this show has at least one more epic “Charlie death scene” up its sleeve.” At the time, I didn’t literally mean another ungodly painful drowning death, so much as I meant just a scene that totally sucks the air (pardon the pun) out of your lungs.

The death of Jin-Soo and Sun-Hwa Kwon was just such a scene. Gripping, moving, and brilliantly shot and acted, this scene will leave a mark on everyone who saw it, whether a fan from the beginning or someone just getting into the show now. I know we’ll get at least a few more epic scenes in the last few episodes, but I wonder if any of them will have the gut-punch power of watching Jin and Sun die together.

And before I go, can we just agree that Michael Giacchino is a ridiculously talented musical composer? For six years now, he has NAILED every necessary musical beat in this show, while also giving context and subtext to even the most minor set pieces. You should check out his work from each season and also his film score composition, especially for Pixar’s Up. If you were one of the countless thousands who cried during Carl and Ellie’s montage at the beginning of Up, you have Michael Giacchino to thank for that!

Anyway, that’s all for now. I’ll be back at some point, soon-ish.

Top 100 Films of the ’00s

Earlier this week, I set a goal…and I achieved it. No, I did not stop eating chocolate, or get up an hour early to go to the gym.  But I did trudge through the painstaking process of selecting 100 great films from the past decade and ranking them in order, from 100 all the way to 1.

It’s been pointed out that there are some glaring omissions on this list. I know. I missed some good flicks, including, but not limited to: Iron Man, Hotel Rwanda, The Fountain, Monsters Inc, and Inglorious Basterds (which I have not seen). Maybe some day I will revise the list, but for now, here’s what I’ve got.

I had started to post this on Twitter, but the 140-character rule was making it all a bit time consuming. Anyway, here you go. Afterwards, let’s discuss and/or argue!

Now maybe this will inspire me to do a Best Songs and Best Albums of the decade list. We’ll see.

Pearl Jam on Conan!

As you (should) know, Conan O’Brien took over The Tonight Show reigns from Jay Leno this past Monday night. The show was solid with Conan introducing a handful of insta-classic skits (the show’s cold opening, the Universal Tram ride) and really nailing the monologue. The interview with Will Ferrell had its moments, but I won’t lie…all of this was just the opening for Pearl Jam! The performance has taken some ridicule from the on-line community, but I don’t care. Deubting “Got Some”, a new track from their upcoming album, the band was tight and spot-on, even if Ed Vedder seemed out of breath and a little off time. That’s ok. These are the kinks we work out before the tour. Enjoy!

Yes, the vocals are rough and seem to be lost in the mix. That’s ok. Dig a little deeper and you’ll hear a gloriously pulsating little ditty that will fit nicely in the middle of the tracklist for Pearl Jam’s new album, Backspacer, which is due on Sept. 22.
